Story Time: Three years ago, I was taking a very hot bath and as I was feeling particularly inspired that day, I wrote poems and didn’t realise how long I had spent in the bath. Long story short, I fainted and hit my head quite badly. My sister found me bleeding with a gash on my forehead and a chipped tooth 😂😂 After a few hours in the emergency room and some surgical glue, I came home and wrote this short quote. I still have the scar and I’m so grateful because it could’ve been much worse. That is all. This little poem of mine has been shared and read at a Women’s History Month event with African Bankers, at the Resnick Aspen Action Forum in Colorado, and at the Leadership Fiji Institute event a couple of months ago. A few pastors and a Rabi have asked permission to recite it during service. A band also asked if they could turn it into a song. Of course, I am honoured that my words have resonated with them but perhaps this is only the case because of the current political climate all over the world. Most of us seem to have become paralysed by fear and hopelessness. Therefore it is imperative that our artists stand up against hate and bigotry, more than ever before. It is time for us to rise above and create. To reveal humanity. To rekindle hope. We must prevent society from destroying itself, from losing its way. Because now... is the time for love. #kamandkojouri #artistsoninstagram This is the original poem: They want us to be afraid. They want us to be afraid of leaving our homes. They want us to barricade our doors and hide our children. Their aim is to make us fear life itself! They want us to hate. They want us to hate the other. They want us to practice aggression and perfect antagonism. Their aim is to divide us all! They want us to be inhuman. They want us to throw out our kindness. They want us to burn our love and bury our hope. Their aim is to take all our light. They think their bricked walls will separate us. They think their damned bombs will defeat us. They are so ignorant they don’t understand that my soul and your soul are old friends. They are so ignorant they don’t understand that when they cut you I bleed. They are so ignorant they don’t understand that we will never be afraid, we will never hate, and we will never be silent. Let life be ours!
