Coming to India was important to me because I used to speak Hindi as a child. Growing up, my siblings and I watched Hindi cartoons and films and listened to Qawwali songs. In a strange way, coming here feels a little like coming home. And although I continue to see so many beautiful things, nothing beats the magnificence of the Golden Temple. Last year, Nancy Molina, the director of a nonprofit in Oregon called ‘Refugee & Immigrant Hospitality Organization’ messaged me to tell me that a woodcarver (Mitch Lang) had created a beautiful plaque for them with my quote. She wanted to thank me for my poems and told me that this plaque was being seen by groups of people from all over the world trying to create a new life in America... Don’t lose faith in humanity.
